About Murrett Family Holding LLC

About

Murrett Family Holding LLC is the private investment office of the Murrett family. We invest the family's own capital. There are no external investors and no fund with a fixed term, and we are therefore free to hold a business for as long as it merits holding, and to judge each investment on its own qualities rather than against a calendar.

We acquire, establish and support operating businesses and real assets in the United States and the United Kingdom. Our activity ranges from the outright purchase of established companies, to the development of new enterprises on land we already control, to partnership with founders and management teams who wish to have an owner beside them for the long term.

Legacy

The family's association with mining spans three generations, and it remains the foundation of everything the office does.

Our grandfather entered the industry as a young engineer and left it as the proprietor of an operating mine, together with the haulage contractor and the equipment concern that had been established to serve it. He built those businesses over the better part of a working life, principally through the quality of the contracts he kept and the loyalty of the people who worked for him, and they remained the family's principal interests for as long as he lived.

Our parents redirected that capital into manufacturing. It was a decision that required conviction, and a tolerance for uncertainty that we have come to admire more with each passing year. The enterprises they built, and in due course sold, are the origin of the office in its present form. Their manner of ownership, attentive to operations and patient with management, is the standard against which we continue to measure our own.

We are conscious that we are stewards rather than founders. Each of us was trained within the family's businesses before assuming any responsibility for them, and we regard the office as a trust to be preserved and strengthened for those who follow. It is directed by members of the family and supported by a small number of advisers whose association with us extends over several decades.

How we work

We regard ourselves as operators as much as investors. Before committing capital we form our own understanding of a business, on the ground, in preference to relying on a summary prepared by others. Once we own a business we remain closely involved. We sit on its board, we settle the plan with its management, and where circumstances require it we are prepared to take on the running of the business ourselves for a period.

We have tended, over the years, to find ourselves in sectors that other investors regard as difficult. Regulated industries, assets that demand substantial capital, structures that span more than one jurisdiction, and businesses with a substantial physical or engineering dimension have been recurring themes. This is not contrarianism for its own sake. It is simply where our experience has proved most valuable.

We are able to move quickly when a transaction is well prepared, and we are content to wait when it is not.

Current focus

Our attention is presently concentrated in four areas.

Commercial and data centre sites

Land whose power supply and planning position will support intensive commercial development, together with the businesses that operate upon it.

Haulage, logistics, storage and freight operators

Transport, warehousing, storage and distribution businesses that own their assets, with an established customer base and scope for operational improvement.

Hotels and hotel operators

The property and the operating company considered together, in locations where demand is durable.

Energy storage sites

Battery and storage assets connected to the grid, at any stage from a consented site to an operating project.

Track record

The office's earlier activity included cobalt mining and the acquisition, development and eventual sale of a group of OEM automotive spare parts manufacturers. Those investments shaped the approach we take today: a preference for real assets, a habit of remaining close to the operation, and a willingness to work in sectors that demand specialist understanding.

Our commitments

We keep our word. We deal with sellers, management teams and advisers directly and in confidence. We do not manage capital on behalf of others, and we do not solicit investment from the public.
